2013 Crop in the Ground and Catching Up Quickly

Based on the June 17 cotton progress report issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), cotton planting for the 2013 season has essentially ended, with only final catch-up or replant work still underway in a handful of states.

According to the report, 95 percent of this year’s crop is now in the ground, just two percentage points behind the four-year average for the same date. The report also reflects the lateness of the overall crop, with only 10 percent squaring reported – nine percentage points behind the four-year average and 16 points behind the same week in 2012.

However, overall crop condition – with the exception of Texas – appears to be catching up nicely. The report shows that 81 percent of the crop to date is rated fair to excellent. Nineteen percent of the crop is rated poor to very poor, with 31 percent of the Texas crop falling into that category due to continuing drought conditions.
