April 29: Southeast Cotton Plantings Increase, Reports USDA
April 30, 2013 Southeastern states have made double-digit progress in cotton planting during the week ending April 28, according to the weekly USDA crop plantings report.
Nationwide, 14 percent of all anticipated cotton acres have now been planted.
Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina report more than ten percent of their cotton planted, with initial progress also beginning in Arkansas, Louisiana and Missouri. Another round of cooler, wet weather in the Mid-South last week hampered field activity and may have closed the window for corn planting in the region.
Elsewhere, California now shows 80 percent of cotton acres planted – up 20 percent from last week – while Arizona acreage jumped ten percent to 65 percent planted. Texas also showed a modest increase, although dry conditions throughout South Texas continue to limit planting.
