Cotton Progress Jumps 13 Percent In Past Week

The 2013 cotton crop continues to make solid progress, with squaring across the Cotton Belt picking up 13 percentage points in the past week and crop condition holding fairly steady.

Beltwide, 23 percent of the season’s crop has now squared, compared to the four-year average of 29 percent by late June. The Alabama crop leads the way, with 63 percent of the state’s cotton at square, followed closely by Arizona and California. Mid-South states report an average of 26 percent squared, with Southeastern states averaging 27 percent squared.

Crop conditions as a whole declined fractionally in the past week, with 77 percent of the crop rated fair to excellent. The crop in Texas continues to reflect dry conditions and anticipated abandonments, with 37 percent of the state’s cotton rated poor to very poor.
