Deltapine Top Brand, PHY 499 WRF Top Cotton Variety for 2014
September 16, 2014 Deltapine was the most popular cottonseed brand planted in the United States during 2014, with PhytoGen’s PHY 499 WRF ranked as the top planted variety, according to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Cotton Varieties Planted report for 2014.
Bayer CropScience Fibermax was the second most popular brand for the year, followed by PhytoGen, Bayer CropScience Stoneville, Americot, Dyna-Gro and All-Tex.
In total, Deltapine varieties accounted for 29.9 percent of the U.S. Upland cotton acres. Led by DP 1044 B2RF, Deltapine captured 47.2 percent of Southeastern cotton acres, 20.2 percent in the Mid-South, 25 percent in the Southwest and 37.1 percent in the Western states.
The Fibermax varieties made up 22.7 percent of U.S. acres, accounting for 8.8 percent of Southeast acres, 6.5 percent in the Mid-South, 32 percent of Southwest acres and 17.3 percent in the West.
PhytoGen accounted for 15.3 percent of U.S. Upland acres, with strong showings in the Southeast (24.6 percent) and the Mid-South (24.5 percent). The brand also captured 9.4 percent of Southwest acres and 20.2 percent of Western acres. PhytoGen varieties also dominated U.S. Pima cotton acres, with three varieties – PHY 805 RF, PHY 811 RF and PHY 802 RF – accounting for 80.4 percent of Pima plantings.
Stoneville brand varieties earned 12.4 percent of U.S. acres. The brand was especially strong in the Mid-South (43.4 percent), while also accounting for 15.6 percent in the Southeast, 3.8 percent in the Southwest and 17 percent in the West.
Among the other brands, Americot accounted for 12.3 percent of U.S. acres, Dyna-Gro captured 4.1 percent of the acres, and All-Tex earned 2.4 percent of the acres.
The report also measured adoption of transgenic varieties – those containing insect and/or herbicide tolerant traits. In 2014, use of these technologies accounted for 99.5 percent of all U.S. Upland cotton acres.
