First Certified Cotton Bale of 2014 Delivered to Gin

While most cotton growers are battling plant bugs and resistant weeds and watching for first blooms, Sam and Josh Ruiz of La Feria, TX have delivered the first official certified bale of 2014 to the La Feria Co-op Gin.

By doing so, the Ruizs won the Harlingen Cotton Committee’s annual First Bale of Cotton contest and a $3,000 prize. The Cotton Committee – part of the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce – has verified for more than 61 years that the nation’s first bale of cotton was grown in the Rio Grande Valley.
