Sale of Nation’s First Cotton Bale Helps Fund Scholarships

The Valley Star in Harlingen, TX, reports that the nation’s first cotton bale for 2016 sold for $16,500 during Harlingen’s First Bale Auction and Scholarship Fundraiser on September 22.

The bale – the first one certified in the U.S. this year – was delivered to Ross Gin Co. by Tommy Hanka of Tommy Hanka Farms in Edinburg, TX on June 16.

During the fundraiser, the bale was sold to Texas Farm Credit, Bayer CropScience and Wilbur-Ellis Company for $11,000. Add-ons starting at $1,000 each were contributed by Ross Gin Co. and Fred Traylor.

Janie Hanka also donated the $3,000 first bale award from the Harlingen Cotton Committee to the scholarship fund on behalf of her husband, Tommy.
