New Focus on Cotton Webcasts Detail High-Yield Fertilization, Palmer Amaranth Control

Two new webcasts focusing on fertilization and on management of Palmer amaranth have been added to the Focus on Cotton online series from the Plant Management Network and Cotton Incorporated.

The first webcast – “Fertilizing for High-Yield Cotton” by Dr. Glen Harris of the University of Georgia – was developed to help growers, consultants and others better understand the role of soil fertility, pH and fertilizers in producing high-yield cotton. The primary emphasis of the presentation will focus on managing fertility on Coastal Plains soils, but many of the concepts also apply to all cotton growing regions of the U.S.

During the 33-minute presentation, Harris discusses multiple topics, including how N-P-K recommendations are adjusted for yield goals, which essential nutrients are mobile in soil, the importance of pH and how it affects soil nutrient availability, potential issues with overliming the importance of potassium nutrition and foliar feeding cotton, and the potential for using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for increasing yield potential.

In the second webcast – “Palmer Amaranth: Biology, Ecology and Management” – Dr. Peter Dotray, professor of weed science at Texas Tech and Agrilife Extension weed specialist, presents information to help growers, consultants and others in the Southwest Cotton Belt better understand the biology, ecology and general management strategies to manage resistant Palmer amaranth, or pigweed.

The presentation is broken into two segments – the first reviewing the biology and ecology of the weed, and the second focusing on current management options available for effective weed control.
