A new webcast showing how soil conductivity measurements can be used to gauge yield potential, inform management practices and analyze yield and profit returns has been added to the Focus on Cotton online series from the Plant Management Network and Cotton Incorporated.

Measuring soil conductivity to create accurate soil texture maps is a new and novel way to help cotton growers create site-specific management zones and establish practices that fit variations in the land.

The webcast – titled “Soil Electrical Conductivity and Zone Management” – is presented by Dr. David Hollens Free, Extension precision agriculture specialist at Clemson University. The 22-minute presentation provides information to help growers, consultants and other industry experts gather accurate soil data; locate divisions in soil texture and yield potential; develop appropriately-sized management zones; and utilize data to set planting densities, nutrient application and nematode management.

The Focus on Cotton series contains more than 35 webcasts on various aspects of cotton crop management, including agronomic practices, crop protection and ag engineering. The presentations are accessible online at any time. The resource also features a newly improved Cotton Extension Search tool, where users can conveniently search for extension resources across all U.S. land-grant universities serving cotton producers.
