TwinLink Technology Available for 2014 in FiberMax and Stoneville Varieties

TwinLink cotton technology from Bayer CropScience has received all necessary U.S. and international approvals and will be commercially available in new FiberMax and Stoneville cotton varieties for the 2014 growing season.

The trait approval and new varieties were announced January 7 during the Beltwide Cotton Conferences in New Orleans.

TwinLink combines season-long Bt protection against worm pests with weed management technology that provides tolerance to full label rates of Liberty herbicide. It contains two Bayer proprietary Bt genes that provide effective management of major lepidopteran pests, such as tobacco budworm, pink bollworm, cotton bollworm and cotton leafworm.

TwinLink will be available to U.S. cotton growers as a GlyTol LibertyLink TwinLink (GLT) trait package which allows over-the-top applications of Liberty herbicide and glyphosate.

“The GlyTol LibertyLink TwinLink trait package gives growers great control of worm pests and the flexibility to choose the herbicide applications that best fit their cotton-growing conditions and farm management practices,” said Paul Callaghan, global cotton traits manager for Bayer CropScience. “GLT will provide an important tool to help growers reduce the potential of weed resistance with the added ability to rotate herbicide modes of action for tough-to-control weeds.”

TwinLink offers multiple benefits for growers, including:

  • Broad-spectrum control of lepidopteran pests such as tobacco budworm, pink bollworm and loopers
  • Superior bollworm protection to help reduce bollworm damage
  • Significant reduction in damage caused by armyworms
  • Greater efficiency and flexibility for weed and insect control that allows growers to make specific decisions for their farms
  • A wide application window for over-the-top applications of Liberty herbicide or glyphosate products
  • Herbicide-tolerant traits with proven crop protection with no impact on yield or quality

In 2014, TwinLink will be available in two new FiberMax and two Stoneville varieties.

FM 1830GLT and FM 2334GLT – both adapted for the High Plains – offer excellent yield potential and fiber quality, plus Verticillium wilt tolerance. FM 1830GLT has an early-medium maturity, and FM 2334GLT has a medium maturity.

ST 5032GLT has an early-medium maturity with strong yield potential and excellent fiber quality, and complements both ST 4946GLB2 and FM 1944GLB2 in cotton-growing regions east of the Mississippi River. ST 5289GLT is a medium-maturing variety adapted for Mid-South and Southeast geographies, with excellent yield potential, especially on marginal soil types, and good fiber quality.
