USDA – Crop Condition Remains Positive as Fruiting Progresses

Cotton squaring throughout the U.S. Cotton Belt increased 12 percent in the past week, seven more states reported bolls in the field, and the overall crop condition remained 87 percent positive, based on the June 29 USDA Crop Progress report.

Squares are now reported in 36 percent of the total crop. Nearly every cotton-producing state showed double digit squaring increases in the fields, led by California with a 39 percent jump. According to the report, Arkansas leads the country with 84 percent of the state’s crop at square.

Boll set edged up to seven percent nationally, led by Arizona and South Carolina (both at 20 percent), Louisiana (19 percent) and Mississippi (20 percent).

Overall crop condition remains relatively unchanged in the past week, with 87 percent of the crop rated fair, good or excellent – four percent better than the same week in 2013.
