NCC Urges Cotton Quality Maintenance Following Rain Events

With excessive rainfall from Hurricane Matthew and other rain events occurring during harvest season in different areas of the Cotton Belt, the National Cotton Council (NCC) and National Cotton Ginners Association remind producers and ginners of guidelines to help preserve the crop’s existing quality.

The NCC website’s Quality Preservation page contains guidelines ranging from “Recommendations for Handling Seed Cotton Exposed to Excessive Rainfall” to proper building and storage of modules.

For example, prior to harvest, producers are encouraged to closely evaluate fields for seed moisture and germinating seed to avoid additional yield and quality losses. Following harvest, producers should bring dry seed cotton to the gin.

Ginners are also reminded that the potential for high-moisture lint after ginning wet seed cotton necessitates careful monitoring of moisture restoration systems.
