Belay Gets Approval for Aerial Application in Cotton
July 20, 2010 Valent U.S.A. Corporation has received EPA approval for aerial applications of Belay Insecticide in cotton.
A third-generation neonicotinoid, Belay is the newest insecticide for cotton and soybeans. This new addition to the Belay label gives growers the flexibility to apply Belay by air, meaning cotton acres may be covered quickly as pest pressure increases.
Carlos Granadino, product development manager for Valent, said this new application method makes Belay an even better fit for cotton growers needing dependable insect control at various points of the year.
“Growers will now have the flexibility to apply Belay by air later in the season when key pests, such as plant bugs and lygus, move rapidly into their cotton fields,” Granadino said. “Belay starts providing reliable control of pests after only a few hours. One strength of Belay is its highly systemic chemistry that quickly translocates in the plant to provide long-lasting protection – typically 14 days, but up to 21 days of control – when the crop is still actively growing and susceptible to the damage from pest feeding.”
In addition to the new aerial label, growers now also have new rates (up to 6 fluid ounces per acre) and adjuvant options to help manage tough pests, such as Lygus. Pat Clay, field market development specialist for Valent, explained the added benefits growers can expect from these increased rates.
“Belay Insecticide at 4.5 fluid ounces per acre provides lygus control and cotton yield protection equal to, or greater than, currently available products in western cotton,” Clay said. “Being a new mode of action for lygus control in Arizona also makes Belay an excellent rotation partner for other chemistries.”
Belay is proven to control a broad spectrum of tough pests including aphids, plant bugs and Lygus. Dr. Peter Ellsworth, University of Arizona Extension entomologist and Arizona Pest Management Center director, recommends Belay as a substitute for over-used chemistries.
“Belay alone looks pretty good. It’s providing commercial control of Lygus,” Ellsworth said. “Now that metaflumizone is not viable, we really need something with potential for selectivity to rotate with flonicamid for Lygus control, and I think Belay right now is the leading candidate for that.”
This new approval is another addition to the growing portfolio of cotton solutions Valent offers growers.
