Options for Tarnished Plant Bug IPM Programs

As growers in the Mid-South plan for their 2016 cotton crop, there may be some questions regarding tarnished plant bug control, based on the availability of Transform insecticide.

Mississippi State Extension specialists and researchers Jeff Gore, Angus Catchot, Don Cook and Darrin Dodds have developed IPM program options – one that includes use of existing supplies of Transform, and one that relies only on Diamond, neonicotinoids, organophosphates and pyrethroids.

In a blog outlining both IPM options, the specialists stated, “Although this is not ideal, we will be able to manage tarnished plant bug with the overall IPM approach. At this time, it is not clear what the availability of Transform will be. Growers that currently have Transform leftover from last year will be able to use it in 2016, but at this time it cannot be purchased. In the meantime, the key will be to manage the crop for earliness and do everything you can to reduce the number of applications needed to manage tarnished plant bugs.”

More details about each program option – including application timing – can be found on the blog page.
