2007 Seed Outlook

Without question, the most fluid of the agricultural inputs sector has been the, for lack of a better word, “shuffling” that has taken place and is taking place. But equally without question, varieties are improving to meet (1) the yield demands of growers and (2) the quality demands of domestic and international buyers.

This past season saw the introduction of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Flex technology that has widened the window of application from what it was with Roundup Ready. And Monsanto’s Bollgard II trait is the second generation of the Bollgard Bt technology.

Dow/PhytoGen’s WideStrike is a an insect protection trait that includes two Bt genes for wider control of lepidopteran pests.

The LibertyLink trait from Bayer CropScience/FiberMax allows the use of Ignite herbicide, and it entered its third year of availability this past season in FiberMax’s more established varieties and in new releases. Ignite is an excellent tool in battling glyphosate resistance.

Delta and Pine Land Co.

DELTA AND PINE is the world’s largest seed company and continues to boast the world’s No. 1 variety: The “Triple Nickel” – DP 555. New variety releases in 2007 will focus on Roundup Ready Flex and Bollgard II traits. Product descriptions have been provided by Delta and Pine Land Co.

D&PL Field Days

North Carolina
Cotton varieties from Delta and Pine Land Company are not only making the consistent yields U.S. cotton producers need, but they are also delivering fiber quality in demand by the international textile mill industry. That was the message delivered at the 2006 D&PL media event held recently at Edens Farms in Hoke County, NC.
“Leading D&PL varieties such as DP 555 BG/RR and DP 444 BG/RR have consistently demonstrated outstanding yield performance,” said Dr. Dave Albers, vice president of D&PL Technical Services. “And if you look closely at the U.S. market share figures and production numbers from the USDA, you begin to realize that fiber quality from D&PL varieties is also very acceptable by foreign mills.”
According to USDA, approximately 50% of the U.S. cotton acres are being planted to D&PL varieties. Based on 2005 USDA average production and export figures, D&PL varieties produced 11.7 million bales.

Texas
At the D&PL Cotton Field Day in Lorenzo, TX , D&PL cotton varieties for the Southwest proved their potential for excellent fiber quality.
The event was held at the farm of producer-cooperator Steve Chapman in Crosby County, where D&PL cotton varieties were put to the test in pivot- and drip-irrigated no-till fields, and in non-irrigated situations. The tour focused on four exciting Bollgard II/Roundup Ready Flex varieties that will be in full-commercial launch in 2007, as well as proven varieties for West Texas such as DP 445 BG/RR and DP 455 BG/RR.
D&PL anticipates having good supply of DP 117 B2RF, DP 143 B2RF and DP 164 B2RF for 2007. DP 143 B2RF has shown potential to perform well – with high yields and good fiber quality – in a variety of growing systems. DP 164 B2RF is producing some outstanding yields this year in the Texas High Plains region, despite the drought and high temperatures. D&PL will also have a supply of PM 2140 B2RF, a very-early maturing variety developed in the D&PL research program located in Haskell, Texas.
