Fending Off Weed Resistance

Wayne Keeling

Dr. Wayne Keeling, weed scientist with Texas A&M University, was a featured speaker on the TechTour to discuss how Texas cotton growers could continue their successful practices in fending off herbicide resistance. The stacked technology featured in FM 9250GL drew praise from Dr. Keeling as another important tool in the toolbox for Texas growers.

“I felt like we had two missions. One was to talk about weed resistance, but then also how GlyTol and GlyTol/LibertyLink fit into weed resistance management programs. I think people are well aware of the resistant pigweed problems that are causing major problems in a lot of states. We have had no documented cases of Palmer amaranth resistant to glyphosate in this area, and we want to keep it that way,” Keeling says.

The credit for success against resistance should go to Texas growers, according to Keeling.

“We feel like growers have been doing a lot of the right things, and not relying too heavily on glyphosate as their only means to control weeds. Again, I feel like the GlyTol / LibertyLink gives us some real opportunities for not only a resistance management tool, but also just improving weed control in cotton in the region,” Keeling says.
