Biotech Increases Yields
Plant biotechnology is already helping the world produce more crops per acre. In 2007, 12 million farmers in 23 countries – 12 developing and 11 industrialized markets – planted food and fiber biotechnology crops. The vast majority of which – 11 of those 12 million farmers – were small-holder or resource-poor farmers from developing countries.

In South Africa, large and small-scale farmers have adopted biotech maize, soybeans, and cotton, which contributed to an estimated $156 million USD increase in farm income from 1998 to 2006. In addition, advances in biotechnology crops are helping farmers reduce the loss of crops to drought, disease and pests.
