Greek Cotton Testing Laboratory Receives ICA Bremen Certification

Konstantinos V. Markou S.A. in Livadia, Greece has become the second cotton testing laboratory to be certified under the ICA Bremen International Laboratory Certification Scheme.

ICA Bremen developed the scheme based on its own laboratory experience, as well as good practices of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Commercial Standardisation of Instrument Testing of Cotton (CSITC) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

“Quality control is the cornerstone of our operations, since all cotton that we produce and trade is controlled, certified and categorized through our modern and fully equipped laboratory before storing or loading,” said Loukas Despotis, quality control manager for Konstantinos V. Markou S.A. “We thank ICA Bremen for its initiative to create certified cotton laboratories across the world, subject to the best world recognized testing practices.”

The certification program is open to any international cotton testing laboratory. Participating laboratories must meet a level of quality assurance based on eight specific criteria, including conditioning, maintenance, calibration and testing procedures.

Cotton South Africa was the first laboratory to receive the ICA Bremen certification, and 16 others are currently being assessed. Once certified, they will become a “laboratory of choice” to resolve quality disputes in line with ICA Bylaws and Rules, as well as providing a service to the cotton industry.
