Jamaica Looking to Rebuild Sea Island Cotton Industry

It may not move the needle on cotton prices. And it certainly won’t impact world production projections for the coming year. But it’s heartening to find a cotton-producing region that’s actively working to expand production.

According to a recent article published by the Jamaican Information Service, the Jamaica Agricultural Development Foundation is working to revitalize the West Indian Sea Island Cotton industry, with plans to have 5,000 acres of cotton under production within the next four years.

That’s ambitious growth, considering the 2015/16 crop is projected to total approximately 800 acres.

Sea Island Cotton is one of the world’s highest quality cottons, based on its fiber length, silk-like quality, fineness and texture. International demand for the fiber is high.
