Preserving Cotton’s History

Back in 2008, Cotton Incorporated became a contributor to one of the most unique cotton museums in the United States. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, on historic Front Street, housed on the trading floor of the old Memphis Cotton Exchange building, the museum preserves the history of cotton from the aspects of economics, society, culture, science and technology. Along with co-sponsors CASE IH and Monsanto, Cotton Incorporated is this time contributing a wealth of information about cotton’s functionality, versatility and history surrounding cotton production and textile-related technology innovations. Elaborate pictorials will highlight how advances in these technologies have increased the efficiency of modern cotton production and kept cotton one of the most consumer-demanded fabrics in the world. Visitors can also use a computer to search for cotton-centric Web sites, while another wall display illustrate the diversity of cottonseed and how it’s used in the manufacturing of everything from currency, makeup and ice cream, to rubber, snack foods and soap. Visitors can lift a sack of seed cotton to feel the weight of this miracle fiber. Calvin Turley and his staff have done an amazing job creating this museum. I urge you to visit it when you’re in Memphis!
