New PhytoGen® brand varieties provide cotton growers more options, greater profit potential

The announcement of the first PhytoGen® brand variety with the Enlist™ cotton trait was met with great enthusiasm by growers and consultants throughout the Cotton Belt. Built on proven, elite genetics, PhytoGen brand PHY 490 W3FE is the first variety in the PhytoGen portfolio that allows growers to consider additional weed control options.

PhytoGen has grown to become the cottonseed company of choice for so many growers largely because the company has always been dedicated to grower needs — in all regions of the Cotton Belt.

“PhytoGen’s industry-leading yield advantage is well-documented,” says Hank King, U.S. leader for PhytoGen. “As part of the Enlist weed control system, the Enlist cotton trait represents the most innovative advancement in weed control technology for the cotton industry. Growers are anxious to plant PhytoGen brand varieties with the Enlist trait on cotton acres throughout the Cotton Belt.”

Along with the new Enlist cotton variety, PhytoGen is adding to its portfolio three new cottonseed varieties specifically developed for challenges faced by producers in West Texas. The availability of PhytoGen brand PHY 223 WRF, PHY 243 WRF and PHY 308 WRF provides growers access to the largest early season portfolio from PhytoGen to date. The expanded lineup of PhytoGen brand varieties continues to deliver early season vigor and stress and storm tolerance. However, native traits now add resistance to bacterial blight and tolerance to verticillium wilt.

PhytoGen® brand varieties for 2016 offer maximum yield, fiber quality and profit potential

The PhytoGen brand varieties available to growers today are greatly expanded and offer growers not only varieties with proven yield potential but also exceptional fiber quality. The “yield plus quality” combination allows more growers to realize greater profit potential by being rewarded with quality premiums from their ginner.
PhytoGen cottonseed enjoys the exclusive distinction of being the most planted Upland variety in the United States for four of the last five years. PhytoGen brand Acala and Pima varieties were also planted on the most acres in each of those years.

The reason PhytoGen has grown to become the cottonseed company of choice with so many growers is largely because it has always been dedicated to grower needs — in all regions of the Cotton Belt. Growing conditions differ greatly from east to west, and PhytoGen remains committed to developing varieties that are bred to perform best in the various regions.

Looking ahead, the PhytoGen germplasm pipeline is rich with great promise and potential for future years.

“PhytoGen is well-positioned for the future,” King says. “The process of introducing new varieties doesn’t happen overnight. While our goal is to bring new traits to the market as quickly as possible, it’s important to understand the process can’t be rushed. We are excited to introduce the first variety with the Enlist™ cotton trait for 2016. Growers can look forward to several additional PhytoGen brand varieties with the Enlist cotton trait to follow in 2017 and beyond.”

Growers can be confident that PhytoGen will continue to develop new varieties that thrive in changing growing conditions and environments, and help to maximize the return on their cottonseed investment.
