The proposed FIELDS funding will provide approximately $573 million to strengthen domestic fertilizer manufacturing and reduce America’s dependence on foreign suppliers, according to a USDA press release. In total, USDA projects “more than $1.34 billion” in investment of the eight selected projects. Ultimately, the release says, the goal is to increase long-term fertilizer availability for American farmers. “Farm security is national security,” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins. “America cannot afford to depend on foreign nations for the fertilizer needed to grow our food and feed our families.” The National Cotton Council (NCC) released a statement expressing gratitude for and support of USDA’s investment through the FIELDS Program. “We thank Secretary Rollins, USDA, and the Trump Administration for recognizing the importance of a strong, affordable, and reliable domestic fertilizer supply,” said NCC Chairman Nathan Reed. “Cotton producers depend on access to economical and reliable crop inputs to remain competitive. Investments that support capacity and improve the resiliency of agricultural supply chains are important to the long-term success of our producers.”
