# Preplant Burndown Time in NC Author: Jim Steadman Published: 2016-03-08 Canonical URL: https://www.cottongrower.com/cotton-production/planting/preplant-burndown-time-in-nc/ --- Much of North Carolina cotton is grown in no-till or strip-till systems. That means they require a preplant burndown treatment to control winter weeds and/or cover crops. Guy Collins, NC State Extension cotton specialist, reminds growers that mid-March through the first week in April is generally the ideal time for burndown applications. In a [recent post on the NC State cotton webpage](https://cotton.ces.ncsu.edu/2016/03/march-is-burndown-time-york-collins/), Collins provides a visual guide to problem weeds in the state, as well as several burndown recommendations for cotton fields. *Source – North Carolina State University*
