Texas Outlines Best Management Practices for New Auxin Herbicides

The approval and availability of three new herbicides for use with auxin-tolerant cotton varieties in 2017 means that growers will need a keen understanding of the products and their proper use.

In an article from the Texas Row Crops Newsletter, AgriLife Extension Agronomist Josh McGinty notes that the two new dicamba formulations – Monsanto’s XtendiMax with Vapor Grip Technology and Engenia from BASF – have both been approved for use in Texas, while state approval is expected soon for Enlist Duo with Colex-D Technology, the new 2,4-D product from Dow AgroSciences.

“The ability to use these herbicides will certainly provide additional options for managing troublesome glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and common waterhemp, but will also present some challenges with regard to off-target movement of these herbicides,” said McGinty in the article. “To avoid these issues in Texas, it will be critical to only use the approved herbicides and to diligently follow the label application requirements. Please note that these are application requirements, not recommendations, and it is expected that applicators fully read and follow them as outlined on the product label.”

The article also includes suggestions for use of the Flag the Technology program in Texas, as well as comments on the importance of proper sprayer cleanout. McGinty has also compiled a chart showing a side-by-side comparison of the three auxin products and the label requirements for each.
