For that reason, Bangladeshi growers were inspired to cultivate cotton this year and have been preparing to plant more seed. Planting began in June and continued into July, with the new crop harvesting period from December 2007 to February 2008. Bangladesh’s Cotton Development Board (CDB) and private growers estimate that the new production will be around 100,000 bales (480 pounds), whereas last season it was only 60,000 bales. Last year, the CDB sold 350,000 pounds of cotton, with the remainder of the country’s cotton produced privately. CDB cotton quality was good last year, with staple up to 1-5/32 and mic above 40, but in the private sector, farmers usually produce cotton with a staple of 1-3/32 to 1-1/8. Cotton Consumption Even those familiar with the Bangladeshi market were really surprised to see the import volume in Bangladesh this year. Last year, Bangladesh imported approximately 5 million bales, but this year approximately 3,160,300 bales have already been imported in five months, from January to May. According to this trend, Bangladesh could be on track to exceed 7.5 million bales this year. This is difficult to comprehend, but it is happening. According to the information of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), its members now have approximately 5.5 million spindles and 130,932 rotors. Currently, 18 mills are not in operation who have 380,456 spindles and 17,125 rotors. There are 23 spinning mills owned by the government and maintained by the Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) for about 500,000 spindles. Last year, Bangladeshi spinners produced approximately 2,325 million pounds of yarn. In the public and private sectors, 45,000 looms produced 1,230.30 million meters of yarn. For the export-oriented and local market, 15,000 knitting and dying machines produced 2,100 million meters. There are approximately 500,000 handlooms running for fabric, and the total production was about 837 million meters in 2006. Exports of finished garments continues to grow, with 200 million dozen garments exported in 2006 and valued at $7.9 billion (USD). In 2007, the target export value is $9.496 billion.
