The overall condition of the U.S. cotton crop continues its weekly shifts in ratings, based on the [September 9 USDA Crop Progress report](https://downloads.usda.library.cornell.edu/usda-esmis/files/8336h188j/qv33s884t/zs25xn89f/prog3719.pdf).

Cotton rated good/excellent declined to 43% (down 5%), fair ratings increased to 39% (up 2%) and poor/very poor ratings slid to 18%.

Open bolls across the Cotton Belt were reported in 43% of the U.S. crop – up 7% in the past week and 6% ahead of the 5-year average for this date. Three states – Arizona, Arkansas and Louisiana – show open ratings at or above 65%.

The first harvest report of the season shows that 7% of the U.S. crop has been harvested to date, with reports coming only from Texas, Arizona and Louisiana.
