For 2019, Deltapine® is offering a slate of cotton varieties for planting in South Texas, including varieties with the latest weed and insect technology, proven yield potential and outstanding fiber qualities.
The #1 planted variety for the past two years, according to the USDA, DP 1646 B2XF is a mid-full-maturity variety that has demonstrated high yields across multiple seasons. This variety packs excellent fiber quality potential and features Bollgard II® XtendFlex® technology to help with resistant weeds. It has a fit across the entire South Texas region on both dryland and irrigated acres, from the Rio Grande Valley to the Upper Gulf Coast. It is an aggressive-growing plant that may need to be managed with plant growth regulators starting early in the fruiting phase.
DP 1835 B3XF falls in the mid-maturity range and offers high yield potential and good fiber quality. It has an excellent fit on any irrigated or favorable dryland acres across the entire South Texas region, from the Rio Grande Valley, Winter Garden, and up to the Upper Gulf Coast. DP 1835 B3XF has a moderate growth habit and should be monitored for plant growth regulator applications.
Multi-year data suggests DP 1835 B3XF has higher yield potential than DP 1646 B2XF in the Winter Garden region of South Texas. This variety also contains Bollgard® 3 technology for added protection against lepidopteran pests.
DP 1845 B3XF is another variety with Bollgard® 3 technology and outstanding fiber quality potential. It is a mid-full maturity variety that has shown high yield potential and a fit across South Texas, especially in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley. DP 1845 B3XF has also demonstrated a fiber quality package that is slightly improved over DP 1646 B2XF, and multi-year data concludes it can yield equally to DP 1646 B2XF in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley. DP 1845 B3XF has a moderate to aggressive growth habit and should be monitored for plant growth regulator applications. It also may require a slightly more aggressive defoliation program compared to other Deltapine varieties.
New for 2019, DP 1948 B3XF is a mid-full-maturity variety with broad adaptation across the South Texas region. This variety has an excellent combination of yield potential and fiber quality that rivals DP 1646 B2XF and DP 1845 B3XF. DP 1948 B3XF has a moderate growth habit and responds well to plant growth regulator applications. DP 1948 B3XF is the latest advancement from the Deltapine New Product Evaluator Program.
DP 1725 B2XF is an early-mid maturity variety with good fiber quality potential. It is best fit for irrigated acres in the Winter Garden and Upper Gulf Coast regions, as well as for favorable dryland acres across South Texas. This variety can be easily managed with plant growth regulators and is a good companion variety to DP 1522 B2XF, but offers better potential for good yield and fiber quality.
2019 Deltapine Product Placement for Texas Blacklands and Southern Rolling Plains
The Blacklands and Southern Rolling Plains (SRP) of Texas experienced a tough 2018 cotton growing season. Most of the region experienced an extremely hot and dry pattern with very little rainfall until the fall, when rain moved in and created a months-long struggle to harvest cotton.
Through it all, DP 1646 B2XF validated why it is the #1 planted cotton variety across the Cotton Belt. It showed excellent yields and fiber quality across the Blacklands and SRP—even in those areas that received 20-plus inches of rainfall—and had to hold its own for weeks, even months, before cotton could be harvested. The key to growing DP 1646 B2XF is managing its aggressive growing habits and strength of terminal by closely monitoring the need for plant growth regulators, especially early in the season.
DP 1845 B3XF is another mid-full variety that has a good fit for the Texas Blacklands Region and SRP area. It has demonstrated a fiber quality package slightly better than DP 1646 B2XF, with similar yield potential. This variety also has shown a moderate to aggressive growth pattern and may respond to a more aggressive defoliation program. DP 1845 B3XF offers high yield potential on both dryland and irrigated acres, along with the Bollgard® 3 XtendFlex® technology package. It showed good performance in 2018 and why it can be a great companion product to DP 1646 B2XF.
A new Deltapine variety that also has shown strong performance across the area is DP 1948 B3XF. Being released in a limited supply for 2019, DP 1948 B3XF is a mid-full variety adapted to Central Texas and the SRP. It offers an excellent combination of yield potential and fiber package across both dryland and irrigation regimes. It responds well to plant growth regulators and has very good storm tolerance. This variety was evaluated for two seasons by Deltapine New Product Evaluator growers, who have proven the performance potential of this new product.
