Despite late-season hurricane winds and torrential downpours, PhytoGen growers across the Southeast are thriving thanks to the bumper yields of high-quality cotton they harvested this fall.
PhytoGen W3FE varieties with WideStrike® 3 Insect Protection and the Enlist™ cotton trait also provide peace of mind to cotton growers who rotate and plant adjacent to peanuts.
“We grow a lot of peanuts, and we treat those peanuts with 2,4-DB to control sicklepod,” says Kirby Shelley of Headland, Alabama, who planted PhytoGen® brand PHY 490 W3FE on his farm for the first time in 2017. “We wanted to ensure we wouldn’t hurt the surrounding cotton with those applications. The PHY 490 W3FE gave us that added protection and provided the pigweed control we needed in cotton.”
Fellow peanut producer Jonathan Mann of Surrency, Georgia, field tested PhytoGen brand varieties PHY 330 W3FE, PHY 340 W3FE and PHY 490 W3FE this year and agrees that PhytoGen W3FE varieties fit well in a peanut and cotton rotation.
A postemergence application of 1 qt./A of Enlist One™ herbicide and 32 oz./A of glufosinate followed by a second postemergence application of 1 qt./A of Enlist One plus 1 qt./A of glyphosate provided “100 percent control of pigweed,” according to Mann. “The Enlist system impressed me.”
“We achieved absolutely excellent control of pigweed, which is our No. 1 weed issue.” This system also provided control of other problem weeds such as sicklepod, morningglory and hailspur, he says. “In our area, the Enlist system works well with our cotton and peanut rotation. I’m proud to see that even near very sensitive tobacco crops, we’ve had zero issues.”
Increasing pigweed pressure convinced longtime PhytoGen grower Jerry McKinnon of Douglas, Georgia, to test several PhytoGen W3FE varieties on his farm in 2017, including PHY 490 W3FE, PHY 450 W3FE and PHY 340 W3FE.
“My farm is planted wall-to-wall with the Enlist system, and it worked very well,” he says. “We sprayed 76 oz./A of Enlist Duo when our cotton was 6 to 8 inches tall.”
“Here in Georgia, it’s a heck of a lot better than the competing weed control system, because with Enlist you can plant right beside a peanut crop without worrying about any crop damage,” McKinnon says.
The Enlist weed control system provides an effective tool against tough-to-control and herbicide-resistant weeds. Use the Enlist system as part of an integratd weed management program that includes pre-emerge and residual herbicides to deliver the exceptional performance you need.
