In Memoriam: Giacomo Friedenberg

Giacomo Friedenberg

Giacomo Friedenberg passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in October 2010. In the words of his business partner at Battistel Amiotti, Massimo Bolognesi: “Giacomo was born in Venice in 1960 and lived there until 1981, when he entered the cotton industry by joining an important Italian broker as partner. He attended the International Cotton Institute in Memphis and then trained in Switzerland with a cotton merchant before returning to Italy. He began traveling to meet clients in Italy, Egypt, Syria, Mali, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Madagascar. Giacomo got to know many of his cotton colleagues over the years and was appreciated for being a businessman who always had a gentlemanly touch, which aptly reflected his Venice roots. He had deep ideals, was loyal, open-minded, and respectful of others’ opinions, which he was ready to discuss. He joked about himself and displayed his sense of humor by saying, ‘I am a man of certain weight in the Italian cotton business.’ It was easy to discuss not only cotton with him, but also everyday life. Someone once described him perfectly as ‘a bon vivant.’” We will surely miss this Venetian boy.
