Legacy Product Profile: Chemtura
Chemtura has operations across the globe, though American cotton growers may be more familiar with its older brand name, Uniroyal.
The company boasts several miticides and insecticides, although its most popular cotton products are defoliants. Firestorm, a paraquat dichloride, utilizes an older chemistry that growers have come to count on. Blizzard is a much newer product that acts as a PPO inhibitor. Both defoliants have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in the West Texas markets where stripper cotton is grown.
“They’re trying to knock those leaves off in a little different manner, and their season shortens up in a hurry. So Firestorm in particular is a product that they’ll put on at low rates that just totally knock those leaves off the plant,” Black says. The two defoliants have found niches in the Southeast as well.
