Deltapine remained the number one single brand in Upland cotton seed market share in 2009, despite a lower percentage of sales this year. The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service reported that Monsanto’s Deltapine lines had 39.32% of the market, down 2.1% from 2008.

Bayer CropScience’s FiberMax brand captured 34.5% of the U.S. market, while its Stoneville brand accounted for 11.5%. Bayer’s combined FiberMax and Stoneville market share was 46%, down a fraction of a percent from ‘08. In 2009, FiberMax increased market share by 2.4%; Stoneville dropped by 2.7%.

Dow’s PhytoGen brand had a 7.2% market share in 2009, up from 4.1% in ‘08.

Most of the balance was made up of Americot/NexGen (3.2%), All-Tex (1.4%) and Dyna-Gro (1.2%).

Both Deltapine’s and Stoneville’s drop in total market share came on the heels of severe acreage reductions in areas where both brands are most popular — the Southeast and Mid-South. Deltapine kept the lead in both areas, capturing 74.5% of the Southeast market and 41.8% in the Mid-South. Stoneville had an 8.4% share in the Southeast and 38.1% in the Mid-South.
