Variety Breakdown: Which Seed Was Planted Most in Your Region?

Bayer CropScience’s FiberMax and Stoneville combined to capture 50.2% of the U.S. Upland market in 2010, the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service reported. That’s an increase of 4.2% over 2009. Individually, FiberMax claimed 39% of the market (first place), while Stoneville added another 11.2% (fourth place).

Monsanto’s Deltapine varieties were the second most popular, taking 25.6% of the market, down 13.7%. Deltapine, a traditional national leader, was particularly hard hit in total market share due to the fact that its seeds have been immensely popular for years in the Mid-South. The region saw less of a cotton-acreage increase in 2010 than did the rest of the nation. For example, while Mississippi’s acreage increased by 115,000 acres and Tennessee’s by 60,000, Arkansas saw a jump of only 10,000 acres and Louisiana was flat. By comparison, Texas alone increased by 700,000 acres in 2010.

Dow’s PhytoGen brand finished third, claiming 12.1% (up 4.9% from 2009), followed by Americot/NexGen (6.2%, nearly doubling its 2009 share), All-Tex (2.7%) and Dyna-Gro (1.5%).

Nationally, FiberMax’s FM 9058F was the most popular variety planted with a market share of 10.36%, followed by PhytoGen’s PHY 375 WRF (7.72%), FiberMax FM 9160B2F (5.53%), FiberMax 9063B2F (4.73%) and Deltapine’s classic DP 555 BG/RR (4.3%). DP 555 is no longer available, and any of the variety planted in 2010 was bought and paid for in 2009.

The highest market share for the top three individual varieties by region were:
