Gdynia Marks 75 Years
May 21st will be a very special day for members of the Gdynia Cotton Association (GCA). The association will celebrate its 75th Anniversary at Cotton House in Gdynia. The Jubilee Celebration will follow the GCA General Assembly of Members. It will be a festive event including a welcoming concert, presentation of the Jubilee Album, awarding of orders and medals and remembrances of years past both spoken and in a gallery of photos. Distinguished speakers expected to appear include Wojciech Szczurek, president of Gdynia; Marek Dominiak, president of GCA, and Alois Schonberger of COTTONEX Anstalt. An evening reception will follow at Rodizio restaurant.
“Gdynia Cotton Association’s history is linked to the development of the textile industry in Poland,” Zbigniew Roskwitalski, executive vice president. “It was founded in 1935 out of the urgent need for creating both rules and a place for settling disputes in the cotton trade. As an arbitration institution, GCA protects members’ interests in the domestic and international cotton turnover.
The Gdynia Cotton Classification School, opened in 1948, is one of three institutions worldwide now offering classification training. The GCA Laboratory, cotton classification courses, international cotton conferences, seminars and workshops are renowned in the cotton society both in Poland and in the world. GCA’s recognized and professionally equipped ISO-accredited laboratory for testing cotton and yarns has been in operation since 1963. The association is also a licenser of the Polish and International Cotton Emblems, which promote products made of pure cotton.
While the activities of GCA have changed over 75 years, the mission of the Association remains the same: to create an economically and structurally strong cotton sector in Poland, as well as on the international arena, by enhancing activities of its members and other institutions, authorities and organizations interested in cotton and allied fiber worldwide.
GCA cooperates with International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), and is one of the signatories of the Universal Cotton Standards Conference, and is a member of several international cotton organizations including the International Forum for Cotton Promotion and the European Committee on Cotton and Allied Textile Industries (EUROCOTON).
“Within its 75-year history, the GCA played an important role in the system of world cotton trade and it served best the interests of Polish cotton trade and industry, remaining faithful to the best traditions,” Roskwitalski emphasizes. “Nowadays, GCA is widely known and appreciated arbitration institution which is active on the world cotton market, playing a key role in cotton classification and testing. Our activities are directed towards shaping the advantageous economical policy for the whole textile branch of industry, as well as for the members, and retaining the level of cotton consumption.”
Personal invitations to the 75th Jubilee Celebration have been extended to GCA members and alumni, government and local authorities, and cotton and textile sector organizations from all over the world. As Roskwitalski points out, “The Gdynia Cotton Association and its 75year-old tradition is not only a collection of material goods, statutes, rules and other legal regulations – most of all it is the people, their work, devotion and engagement in development and activities for the realization of which the Association was established. They built the history and we hope to be with them on this Jubilee occasion.”
