Profit Calculator Debuts At Commodity Classic

The PrecisionAg Institute will debut the Guidance & Section Control Profit Calculator at the Commodity Classic, March 4‐6 in Anaheim, CA. The tool focuses on guidance systems and section controllers, with the goal of helping growers understand their return on an investment in this technology.

The calculator will prompt growers to enter farm input data (acreage, width of field, distance of land to cover, etc.) specific to their individual operation. Growers can then enter information about their planter, fertilizer rig, and other equipment. Based on the information entered, the calculator will report how much of a payback growers will see (in dollars/acre), and approximately how long that payback will take (in years) based on the cost of the equipment required. The tool will also give growers a total farm operation result, based on all farm equipment.

“Along with summary charts and graphs, results will be presented in a ‘take home message’ form so that users don’t get lost and miss the main points,” says Kevin Dhuyvetter, Extension Agricultural Economist for Kansas State University. “All of the information presented is neatly formatted and print‐ready at the click of a button.”

The calculator was developed by Kansas State University Ag Extension with support from the PrecisionAg Institute, the agriculture industry’s independent global forum dedicated to the sharing of precision agriculture practices, ideas, research, products, services and success stories.

“Some of the most important savings in precision agriculture technology are coming from the ability to manage inputs by making individual trips through the field more precise through georeferenced control of booms and seed boxes,” says K. Elliott Nowels, Institute director. “But really understanding the costs and benefits of this can be challenging and time‐consuming for growers. It is our goal with this calculator to give growers a glimpse of the additional profit they can make by adopting guidance technology.”

The Institute will present demos of the calculator at its Learning Center (booth #446) at the Commodity Classic. To learn more about the Learning Center, click here.
