Deltapine Holds Top Spot in 2016 Planted Varieties
The Deltapine brand of Upland cottonseed was again the most popular brand planted in the U.S. this year, according to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s Cotton Varieties Planted report for 2016.
The Americot/NexGen brands were the second most popular varieties planted, followed by Bayer’s FiberMax brand, PhytoGen, Bayer’s Stoneville brand, and All-Tex/Dyna-Gro.
Americot’s NG 3406 B2XF was the top Upland variety planted in the U.S. this year, commanding nearly 12% of the acres, with strong showings in the Southwest (16.8% of acres) and the Mid-South (11.6%).
According to the report, which was released on September 14, Deltapine brand Upland varieties accounted for 32.6% of the U.S. acreage in 2016. Regionally, Deltapine varieties were planted on 62% of acres in the Southeast (AL, FL, GA, NC, SC, VA), 50.3% of Mid-South acres (AR, LA, MS, MO, TN), 16.7% of cotton acres in the Southwest (TX, OK, KS), and 31.5% of Western acres (AZ, CA, NM). Of the 20 most popular varieties in the report, Deltapine claimed nine spots, led by DP 1522 B2XF.
Americot/NexGen claimed 22.5% of the 2016 acreage, including 2.6% of Southeast acres, 13.7% in the Mid-South, 33.1% of Southwest acres, and 1.2% in the West.
Bayer’s FiberMax brand varieties accounted for 16.2% of the U.S. acreage. The varieties were planted on 1.2% of Southeast acres, less than 1.0% of Mid-South acres, 26.1% of Southwest acres, and 21.5% of Western acres. Most popular FiberMax varieties for 2016 were FM 2011GT, FM 1830GLT and FM 2334GLT.
PhytoGen brand varieties accounted for 12.9% of U.S. Upland cotton acres. The varieties were planted on 21.8% of Southeast acres, 15.8% of Mid-South acres, 8.4% of Southwest acres, and 22.9% of Western acres, led by PHY 333 WRF, PHY 444 WRF and PHY 499 WRF.
PhytoGen varieties remained the primary choice for Pima cotton growers in 2016, accounting for 72.7% of all Pima acreage. Three of the company’s varieties topped the Pima chart – PHY 805 RF (27.8% of Pima acres), PHY 811 RF (20%) and PHY 881 RF (12.2%).
Bayer’s Stoneville brand varieties accounted for 8.8% of total U.S. acres. They were planted on 9.5% of Southeast acres, 14.9% of Mid-South acres, 6.7% of Southwest acres, and 13.7% of Western acres. The top Stoneville variety was ST 4946GLB2.
All-Tex/Dyna-Gro varieties accounted for 6.0% of the U.S. acres, with its strongest showing in the Southwest (8.1% of acres).
The report also noted that transgenic varieties – engineered for resistance to worms, herbicides or both – accounted for about 98.7% of Upland cotton planted in the U.S. in 2016.
Estimates of the percentage of the cotton varieties planted in 2016 were based on informal surveys made by USDA’s Cotton and Tobacco Classing Offices with ginners, seed dealers, Extension agents and other industry sources.
