Dyna-Gro Widens Bollgard 3 Collection

In the past few seasons, Dyna-Gro has been updating its portfolio to bring Bollgard 3 technology to its customers. The company’s (a division of Nutrien) cotton breeding program also has been focused on incorporating native traits such as bacterial blight resistance and Verticillium wilt tolerance into new variety offerings.

Full-Season Fits

Frank Groves, Dyna-Gro Cotton Business and Research Manager, says there will be five new varieties that will be in greater supply for the 2022 season that growers should consider.

“If we look to Georgia, we have DG 3799 B3XF and DG 3615 B3XF that are looking really good,” he says. “It is really neck and neck as to which variety is going to be dominate for us. DG 3799 B3XF is a few days later, so in theory that would say it’s a better fit for Georgia, but both are looking very comparable in side-by-side trials. Both have our native traits of bacterial blight resistance and Verticillium wilt, and each have outstanding storm proofness.”

Earlier Season Selections

For the earlier season environment in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Missouri Boothill, and South Texas, DG 3456 B3XF will be an option to consider.

“This is going to be the most widely adapted variety we have in terms of the soil types it is planted on,” Groves says. “It is a typical Delta-type variety and has been an outstanding yielder. It makes those fields that folks want to get their wedding pictures made in. It does not have bacterial blight resistance, so if that is big problem for you, I probably would steer you away from it, but otherwise it is going to be pretty dominate in our early, mid market.”

For the south Delta, the company will be offering a root knot and reniform nematode resistant variety DG 3644 B3XF. It was in very limited supply this season.

“DG 3644 B3XF performs well across a lot of conditions, but it excels in a nematode scenario,” Groves says. “Typically, nematode resistant varieties have a big drop off in performance in non-nematode environments, but 3644 seems to perform well there.”

In west Texas, DG 3402 B3XF has become one of the company’s biggest sellers. The variety is an early, mid maturity with outstanding stress tolerance and bacterial blight resistance and Verticillium wilt tolerance.

“The variety has large seed and excellent seedling vigor,” Groves says. “It is going to be a workhorse in an early season environment. In later season situation where you are dealing with a rain-fed scenario or don’t have the capability to get across every acre with the amount of irrigation you would like, DG 3402 B3XF is going to be worth a look.”
