Syngenta Licenses VipCot To Dow
Syngenta announced at Beltwide that is has licensed a number of VipCot cotton varieties, as well as access to its COT102 cotton transgenic trait, to Dow AgroSciences.
Under the terms of the agreement, Dow will receive a global license to develop and commercialize stacked combinations of COT102 with Dow’s traits. COT102 contains Vip3A, a novel vegetative insecticidal protein that is structurally different to insect traits currently on the market and has a distinct mode of action, which is an important tool for insect resistance management.
Dow will also receive a license to a number of VipCot cotton varieties, stacked with glyphosate tolerance, under its PhytoGen cottonseed brand. Pending regulatory approvals, these varieties are expected to be launched in 2012 and will offer cotton growers protection against pests such as cotton bollworm, tobacco budworm and armyworms.
Also, Dow will release three new PhytoGen varieties in 2010. Two ― PHY 367 WRF and PHY 565 WRF ― are stacked with the WideStrike and Roundup Ready Flex traits and the other ― PHY 525 RF ― has Roundup Ready Flex only.
• PHY 367 WRF is an early maturing variety with root-knot nematode (RKN) tolerance and is the company’s first entry in this category. It is expected to perform well in the upper Mid-South and lower Delta regions.
• PHY 565 WRF is a mid- to full-maturing variety with high yield potential. It was specifically selected for broad adaptation and good to excellent fiber quality.
• PHY 525 RF is a mid- to full-maturing variety selected for broad adaptation, high yield potential and good to excellent fiber quality. This variety should appeal to growers who are looking for a Roundup Ready Flex-only variety.
