Bayer Releases Two New Varieties

Bayer CropScience has advanced one FiberMax and one Stoneville cotton seed variety to join a product lineup available to farmers across the Cotton Belt in 2012. The announcement was made at the Beltwide Cotton Conferences in Orlando.

Bayer says the new varieties – FM 1944GLB2 and ST 5445LLB2 – continue to raise the bar in yield and quality, and both varieties will help farmers control glyphosate-resistant weeds.

“We are extremely pleased with what we’ve seen from FM 1944GLB2 and ST 5445LLB2,” said Jeff Brehmer, U.S. marketing manager for FiberMax and Stoneville. “In 2011 Bayer introduced the first-ever multiple herbicide-resistant cotton variety with FM 2989GLB2. With the 2012 advancement of FM 1944GLB2, farmers in the Southwest and Eastern United States now have a variety that gives them the most advanced trait technology available on the market today. No other cottonseed company can offer this trait technology.

“The first Stoneville variety with LibertyLink technology, ST 4145LLB2, was launched in 2011,” Brehmer continued. “Cotton farmers from the Mid-Atlantic to the Mid-South have been extremely pleased with the variety performance and yields. ST 5445LLB2 will give them a second option with LibertyLink technology both in areas with glyphosate resistance and where farmers want to rotate herbicides to increase diversity on their farms.”

FM 1944GLB2 is the first GlyTol LibertyLink Bollgard II stacked variety with adaptation to the eastern region of the Cotton Belt. The variety also has a Southwest fit. FM 1944GLB2 is similar to FM 1740B2F, which is a proven performer in the East, it has a slightly later maturity along with improved yield potential and fiber quality.

Poncho/VOTiVO Will be Paired With AERIS for 2012

First introduced in fall 2010 for applications on corn seed, Poncho/VOTiVO received its registration on cotton last spring.

“We have been evaluating Poncho/VOTiVO paired with AERIS on cotton and have seen improved vigor and yield. We believe cotton growers will be pleased with the results the combination of Poncho/VOTiVO and AERIS provides for their cotton,” said Keith Vodrazka, product manager for Bayer CropScience.

Poncho/VOTiVO on cotton is long-lasting, protecting against even second generation nematodes, and fast-acting to defend plants from the first day onward, Bayer says. Because it protects against multiple types of cotton-parasitic nematodes makes it a partner for Integrated Pest Management programs.

Poncho/VOTiVO is paired with AERIS seed-applied insecticide/nematicide to provide additional control of early-season insects, including thrips, aphids and cutworms. AERIS also protects cotton against low-to-moderate nematode populations, providing added nematode protection when paired with Poncho/VOTiVO.

Liberty Herbicide to Replace Ignite

Liberty herbicide will replace the Ignite herbicide brand for use on LibertyLink crops in the U.S. market.

Weed resistance is a growing problem and Bayer says the LibertyLink system with Liberty herbicide is the most reliable and powerful in-crop or non-selective weed management solution available to battle glyphosate-resistant weeds. Using the LibertyLink system allows for the rotation of crops, traits and herbicides to preserve the utility of herbicide-tolerant technology.

“Liberty herbicide still offers the same benefits and levels of performance as the former Ignite herbicide,” said Al Luke, head of broad acre crop marketing for Bayer CropScience. “Liberty herbicide is the most reliable and powerful in-crop weed management solution available to battle glyphosate-resistant weeds.”
