Better Weed Control Begins with Giving Producers More Options to Farm Their Way

Weed management options have changed in recent years, and more cotton growers are turning to the Enlist^® weed control system as the cornerstone of a herbicide program that delivers clean fields with fewer application restrictions than dicamba-based systems.

Jared Walls, Corteva Agriscience market development specialist in the Southeast, says cotton producers are often surprised at the benefits they get with the Enlist weed control system — and those benefits go far beyond clean fields.

“There is no doubt that Southern cotton and soybean farmers are getting excellent weed control with Enlist One herbicide, thanks in part to the 2,4-D choline that does a great job on glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth, waterhemp and other tough-to-control weeds,” Walls said.

Weed scientists, consultants and agronomists across the Cotton Belt emphasize the need for a program approach to weed management. A good program approach utilizes multiple modes of action and sites of action, as well as overlapping residual herbicides for long-lasting control. That’s where the Enlist weed control system stands apart from other systems. “Enlist One herbicide gives us much greater flexibility when it comes to mixing and matching weed management tools. For example, you can tank mix Enlist One with glufosinate for one of the best weed control applications in cotton or soybeans,” Walls said. “While tank-mixing dicamba with glufosinate is permitted, that combination lowers the pH level, increasing the risk for volatility and off-target movement.”

Walls said Enlist One herbicide also gives growers greater flexibility with fewer restrictions than dicamba. First, Enlist One herbicide doesn’t have any application restrictions based on the time of day or calendar cutoff dates. Second, Enlist One herbicide doesn’t require a volatility reduction agent (VRA) or drift reduction agent (DRA) added to the tank because it’s already formulated to stay on target.

“Enlist One has near-zero volatility and reduced physical drift potential designed into the formulation when applied as directed, so farmers can be confident their applications will land where they’re supposed to go and control the targeted weeds,” Walls said. “Applications of dicamba in cotton and soybeans are required to have VRAs and DRAs, but farmers don’t have to do that with Enlist One herbicide.”

One of the biggest benefits with the Enlist weed control system is its flexibility with other Cotton Belt crops. Many cotton growers also plant peanuts, soybeans or corn, which are all considered compatible crops with Enlist One herbicide. Compatible crops can be planted adjacent to fields of Enlist cotton or Enlist soybeans, and growers can still make applications of Enlist One herbicide when wind is blowing toward a compatible crop. Walls said that flexibility with neighboring fields has earned Enlist^® cotton a nickname in his home state of Georgia.

“People call Enlist cotton the ‘peanut partner of choice’ because it works so well with peanut management,” Walls said. “Growers don’t want to spray dicamba around peanuts, so planting Enlist cotton and using Enlist One herbicide is the perfect choice in Georgia.”
