Kai Hughes Named ICAC Executive Director

Kai Hughes is the new Executive Director of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).

Hughes, who becomes the seventh ICAC Executive Director since 1949, assumes his new duties September 1. Terry Townsend, executive director ad interim, will serve until August 31 and remain in Washington as an advisor to Hughes for several weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

Hughes has been the Managing Director/CEO of the International Cotton Association (ICA), headquartered in Liverpool, UK, for the last 9 years. He has over 20 years of senior management experience in challenging environments, ranging from the Ministry of Defense, higher education, and not-for-profit organizations.

As Managing Director of the ICA, Hughes has been acting globally at diplomatic and ministerial levels to promote contract sanctity and to lobby governments on trade issues affecting cotton.

Hughes brings extensive knowledge of the world cotton industry and solid management experience to the challenges facing ICAC and the global industry. He holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), and is fully conversant with the governance and administrative requirements for the running of complex organizations.

Hughes was selected by a Task Force on Executive Director Search composed of delegates from nine ICAC members and confirmed by the full Standing Committee on June 20, 2017.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, ICAC is the international commodity body representing cotton and cotton textiles. The organization’s mission is to assist governments in fostering a healthy world cotton economy.
