2016 Seed Showcase – CROPLAN

From Cotton Grower Magazine – November 2015

There’s no question that 2015 was a season of extremes. It was, as Robert Cossar described it, a year of all environments.

For an up-and-coming cottonseed company like CROPLAN, gleaning the data from 2015 to help drive placement strategies for 2016 is essential.

“When we look at data and varietal performance, we’re looking for the varieties that performed in multiple environments,” says Cossar, cotton product manager for WinField, which owns the CROPLAN brand. “That will tell us about the stress load that each variety can – and can’t – handle.

“At WinField, we say it’s all about proper placement, regardless of the crop,” he adds. “We have good varieties. We have to place them right.”

CROPLAN embraced the Bollgard II XtendFlex technology in 2015 with two varieties that performed well in limited launches – CROPLAN 3475B2XF and CROPLAN 3885B2XF. Cossar is pleased with what he’s seen from those offerings this year.

“CROPLAN 3475B2XF is an early variety with great fiber quality,” he says. “It looked good in West Tennessee and in Southwest Oklahoma. We also put it into some full season markets for late plantings to help beat the freeze, and it looked outstanding.”

CROPLAN 3885B2XF is a true full season variety suited for the southern parts of the Cotton Belt, from South Georgia to Texas south of Lubbock. Good supplies of CROPLAN 3787B2RF will also be available.

Cossar is also comfortable with the fiber quality coming from the CROPLAN varieties. “We want to make sure we have competitive fiber quality in terms of strength, staple and micronaire,” he notes. “That’s the reason the mills come for U.S. cotton.”

The company is evaluating several new varieties for possible launch in 2016, with final decisions due in January.
