For more than two decades, some of the world’s best and brightest young minds from the cotton industry have taken time to immerse themselves in the details of the cotton business through the American Cotton Shippers Association (ACSA) International Cotton Institute in Memphis.
The school has developed an excellent reputation throughout the world, and many of its graduates now fill cotton leadership positions in their respective companies and countries.
This year, the 23rd annual Institute will convene June 5-July 14, at the University of Memphis for a six-week, in-depth review of the cotton industry. Long-time program director Bill Griffin retired following the 2016 program, and Jerry Marshall with The Yiyang Company, has stepped in to manage the program.
The program combines classroom discussion led by guest faculty members and mentors from throughout the cotton industry, as well as field trips to Cotton Incorporated and into the Mississippi Delta to provide hands-on exposure to cotton production, ginning, classing, marketing and promotion.
“The program is basically unchanged, but we are making a few adjustments,” explained Marshall. “For example, we’re bringing in additional speakers to cover some newer topics like options, managing futures positions, and polyester. We’re also working to better sequence the schedule to get related subjects closer together.”
