New Webcast Focuses on Cotton Virus Detection and Treatment

A new webcast showing how systematic sampling can help identify the prevalence and movement of cotton diseases and aid in disease treatment has been added to the Focus on Cotton online series from the Plant Management Network and Cotton Incorporated.

Viral diseases can have a tremendous impact on cotton quality and overall yield. Rather than waiting for diseases to establish or flourish, ag professionals need to closely understand their prevalence and behavior.

The webcast – titled “Detection of Virus Diseases in Cotton” – is presented by Akhtar Ali, associate professor of plant virology at the University of Tulsa. The presentation provides information about symptoms associated with viral diseases of cotton, common viral strains which greatly impact productivity and yield, the behavior of viruses and the role of pests in transmission, and survey results from cotton fields in Oklahoma and Texas.

This webcast is part of the Focus on Cotton series made available by the Plant Management Network and Cotton Incorporated. The Focus on Cotton series contains more than 30 webcasts on various aspects of cotton crop management, including agronomic practices, crop protection and ag engineering. The presentations are accessible online at any time.

The resource also features a newly improved Cotton Extension Search tool, where users can conveniently search for extension resources across all U.S. land-grant universities serving cotton producers.
