Evaluate Young Cotton for Thrips Damage

The rapid rate of cotton planting that many grower enjoyed in early May means that good stands of young plants can be found in most fields. That also means it’s time to start watching for signs of thrips damage.

The North Carolina State Extension cotton team notes that control from seed treatments is likely beginning to diminish and that frequent and thorough scouting will be needed to determine if foliar sprays are justified. For their report, click here.

Scott Stewart, University of Tennessee Extension entomologist, says that thrips activity is right on schedule for Tennessee fields. Cotton at the first and second true-leaf stage will be the most sensitive and could benefit from a foliar application. Read more here.
