Cotton planting was simply marking time in most states during the week ending May 5, reported USDA, as unseasonably cool and wet conditions kept planters parked throughout most of the Cotton Belt.

The weekly planting progress report shows little inroads were made throughout the Southeast and Mid-South, with only Alabama and Louisiana showing significant gains in planting. Arizona and California continued to lead all states, with 85 percent and 90 percent of their respective acres now planted.

Nationwide, only 17 percent of all cotton acres are reported as planted – ten percentage points behind the four-year (2008-2012) average and more than 50 percent behind the same time period last year.
