Comment Period Open for Low Gossypol Cotton

A petition seeking deregulation of a cotton variety genetically engineered to produce low levels of gossypol in its seed is now available for public comment from USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for 60 days, effective December 5.

A petition from Texas A&M University seeking deregulation of a cotton variety genetically engineered  to produce low levels of gossypol in its seed compared to other conventional cotton varieties is now available for public comment from USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), effective December 5, 2017.

Cottonseed meal is a by-product of cotton and is commonly used in food and feed. However, its use is limited, because certain levels of gossypol are toxic.

The petition will be available for public review and comment through February 5, 2018, and can be accessed online.

Comments may be submitted during the 60-day period at www.regulations.gov by entering docket number APHIS-2017-0097 in the search box.
