Acclaimed Author Dr. Clayton Brown to Visit Cotton Museum

The Cotton Museum at the Memphis Cotton Exchange is hosting a book discussion with historian and author Dr. Clayton Brown on the evening of June 4. He’ll be discussing his newest publication, King Cotton in Modern America: A Cultural, Political, and Economic History since 1945. The event is open to the public and features a complimentary Museum tour and cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception.

King Cotton in Modern America places the once preeminent southern crop in historical perspective, showing how “cotton culture” was actually part of the larger culture of the United States (despite the widespread perception of its cultivation and sources as hopelessly backward).
Combining history with music and literature, Dr. Brown carries cotton’s story to the present with a special emphasis on the meaning of cotton in the lore of Memphis’s Beale Street, blues music, and African American migration.

The event will be held at the Museum at 7pm on June 4, 2011. Tickets are $20, or free for Museum members. Those wishing to attend may call the museum to make reservations.
