Britain Lends Expertise to Bangladesh Garment Sector

According to Justine Greening, UK’s secretary of state for international development, British experts will go to Bangladesh to help improve the safety of the nation’s garment sector.

The collaboration, which was made at the request of Bangladesh’s building regulations agency, involves a team of three UK experts who will examine building standards, legislation, and scrutinize the current inspection schemes for existing and new garment factories.

The team will also investigate how to best collaborate with the private sector and international labor organizations to enforce safety standards in Bangladesh.

In July 2013, the UK brought together representatives from Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Arcadia, and other industry bodies to discuss how the two nations can partner with these groups to improve safety and ethical responsibility throughout the supply chain.

These initiatives were spurred by the tragic incident in Dhaka, Bangladesh this April, when morethan  1,100 garment factory workers lost their lives.
