Bt Cotton Cited in Indian GMO Food Debate

The proposed introduction of a GMO eggplant variety in India has provoked a well publicized and heated debate between protestors and Jairam Ramesh, India’s Minister of State for Environment and Forests. Amid the debate, the financial impact of Bt cotton was brought into question. Critics voiced concern over the cost of Bt technology to financially challenged Indian farmers. Bt cotton currently is the only transgenic crop commercially available in India.
