Delivering farm safety information directly where it is most needed, has been the inspiration behind Cotton Australia’s latest safety initiative, the CottonSafe Guide wall chart, which is being mailed out to all cotton growers this week.

The CottonSafe Guide wall chart has been styled and designed to go straight up on the wall in workshops, farm shed’s and lunchrooms, providing a range of occupational health and safety messages, specifically targeted to those working in the cotton industry.

Cotton Australia Regional Manager James Houlahan says the CottonSafe Guide wall chart is an important tool to raise the level of OHS awareness in the cotton industry, while promoting an improved safety culture. Production and distribution of the CottonSafe Guide wall chart has been assisted by ProVisual.

Mr Houlahan says that overall a culture of safety means giving everyone who works on cotton farms some ownership over accident prevention, where everyone from farm manager to the supervisor and the newest farm worker accepts that safety is both an individual and a shared responsibility.

James Houlahan says with a national uniform occupational health and safety model being introduced by legislation across all States and Territories from 1 January 2012, Cotton Australia has been leading the way with a pro-active and targeted focus on OHS in the cotton industry.

“Under the CottonSafe banner, Cotton Australia will continue to deliver growers with up-to-date evidence based guidelines, tools and other resources like the CottonSafe Guide wall chart to effectively manage their OHS responsibilities and mitigate potential injury, legal and financial risks from poor OHS performance,” Mr Houlahan said.

“The CottonSafe Guide wall chart will fit comfortably alongside a range of practical tools and resources now in production by Cotton Australia to help growers and cotton farm workers manage safety as an integral part of their farm businesses and in their day to day work activities.”

The CottonSafe Guide wall chart contains detailed and reliable information on OHS risk management, risk assessment and safe procedures as well as emergency preparedness. The wall chart also lists some practical safety tips about working with tractors, ATV’s, chemicals and around irrigation pump machinery.
