New Initiatives in the Bangladesh Textile Industry

Dr. Quamrul Ahsan, editor-in-chief, Cotton Bangladesh

1. Please describe the presentation you plan to give, in general terms. What will your topic be, and why is it relevant in the current business environment?

The biggest challenge facing the Bangladesh textile industry isn’t the high price of cotton, although that is a factor. But more important than that is the ability of spinners to have a secure cotton supply – which means sourcing the fiber from more than two countries.

2. How will attendees benefit from attending your presentation?
Attendees will get a well-rounded view of the textile market in Bangladesh. While there are still some challenges to overcome, there are tremendous possibilities as well.

3. What do you hope to learn and achieve during the event?
ICA Dubai is going to be an unprecedented event. A record number of Bangladeshi participants have already registered. China and other South and South East Asian countries will also participate in a bigger way. As we know that the center of gravity of the Textile World has moved to Asia. This year ICA Dubai event will have a special significance with greater number of Asian participants. I am glad to see that ICA has now become a truly International forum that will bring the entire cotton world under a single roof in Asia. I hope this special event will bring new ideas and cooperation between cotton industries across the globe, especially during this most uncertain and volatile period in the history of cotton world.

Bashir Ali Mohammad, chairman, Gul Ahmed Textile Mills Limited

1. Please describe the presentation you plan to give, in general terms. What will your topic be, and why is it relevant in the current business environment?
The main theme of my presentation will be how the current business environment (increasing production costs, especially soaring raw material prices but also other cost factors like labor, energy, water, etc.) is affecting textile companies and what they need to do to adapt and prepare for the future.

2. How will attendees benefit from attending your presentation?
The benefit will be to better understand the challenges the textile industry is facing being squeezed between rising cost factors on the one hand and limited scope to absorb and to pass on these rising costs to the retailer/customer.

3. What do you hope to learn and achieve during the event?
I hope to learn more about the global cotton supply and demand situation in general and in India in particular and the outlook for cotton production in the future. Furthermore, I hope to intensify cooperation with the cotton industry as the cotton textile value chain – from fiber to retail – is in need to better understands each other’s challenges.

2. How will attendees benefit from attending your presentation?

All Organisations have to change or they will not survive but you have to know what you are changing towards and certainly by giving a thought provoking presentation I hope that people will have the chance to formulate their own views on what is real and what is not thus enabling them to adapt their organisations accordingly.

3. What do you hope to learn and achieve during the event?
I hope to meet old friends and have the opportunity of making new ones and by having a large portion of the cotton world in one place be able to gain an overview of the cotton world. It is a wonderful opportunity to network.
